Hugh Glass is a military scout. He and his Indian half-breed son Hawk, serve together in the same company as John Fitzgerald, and Jim Bridger under Commander Andrew Henry, mainly tasked to hunt animal for pelts. They constantly have to face both the native Indians and the French. While hunting with Hawk, Glass returns back to camp after hearing the commotion there when the Indians attack. As they flee to the river, the attack kills 33 of them. Fitzgerald suggest a route for the company but Glass suggest the opposite route. Henry listens to Glass and they rest for the night. At first light Glass tells Hawk to remain with the company as he goes ahead first. But Glass heads into a Grizzly bears territorial domain and gets attacked viciously. He manages to kill the beast, but he cant speak as his throat is injured badly. The company finds him and carries him on a makeshift palanquin. Fitzgerald keeps suggesting Henry to leave Glass as apparently theres nothing anybody can do to save him. Eventually Henry gives up. But he insists on letting Glass die naturally, promising money reward for three men who stay behind with Glass. Hawk and Bridger takes the call, and surprisingly so did Fitzgerald.
But Fitzgerald gets impatient. He offers Glass a quick death if he just blinks. Glass closes his eyes for some time, and when he opens his eyes Fitzgerald considers it as his blink and continues to try to kill Glass. Hawk catches Fitzgerald and the two struggle, eventually ending in Fitzgerald killing Hawk. Bridger comes and soon Fitzgerald convince him to bury Glass alive in a shallow grave, but he stops as Glass is neck deep. Glass crawls himself out of his grave and surviving on eating bits and pieces until his legs and back can support him to stand. After hes able to walk, Glass escapes an Indian raid party and meets an Indian man carving meat from a dead beast. Glass begs for some and the man gives, but Glass faints after eating. The Indian is actually pursuing his daughter Powaqas kidnappers. He helps Glass after Glass explains his ordeal. He even builds the fainted Glass a makeshift shelter when they face a blizzard. When Glass wakes up the man has gone, and Glass finds a French trappers camp. He waits until nightfall and readies to steal a horse. But a French man brings an Indian girl and rapes her near Glass. He rescues the girl and they escape on a stolen horse, but Glass dropped the flask Bridger left him.
The girl leaves Glass and The French pursuers catches up to him, so he runs off of a cliff, breaking the horses neck. As another blizzard looms, Glass removes the horses organs and use the carcass as a makeshift blanket. One of the French wanders off into Henrys headquarters bringing the flask Glass dropped. Henry wonders if its the missing Hawk so they set out to find him. They instead find Glass himself. Henry rides back ahead but Fitzgerald had already gone, after robbing the companys safe. Glass reveals the truth and asks supplies to hunt Fitzgerald. Henry decides to go with him. As Glass spots a camps smoke in the wilderness, he and Henry splits to check it out from opposite directions. But Henry meets Fitzgerald, who then kills him. Glass finds the body and brings it to lure Fitzgerald out. He succeeds and they fight a bloody melee. Glass finally has the upper hand and readies his killing blow. But he spots a band of Indians and remembers the words of the Indian man he met earlier that revenge is in Gods hands, and he lets Fitzgerald floats on a river current to them, who kills him.
